Hello and welcome to "Read Me: A Parental Primer for 'The Talk'"!

As a parent, you want to do everything you can to support your child's growth and development, but talking to them about sex and sexuality can be daunting. You may feel uncomfortable, unsure of what to say, or worried about saying the wrong thing. And in today's world, with so much information (and misinformation) available online, it can be hard to know where to start.

That's why I wrote this book - to help parents like you navigate this important conversation with confidence, clarity, and compassion.

In "Read Me," I draw on my years of experience as a sexuality educator, parent coach, and writer to provide you with practical, evidence-based strategies for talking to your child about sex and sexuality at every age and stage of their development. I cover everything from anatomy and reproduction to healthy relationships, consent, and communication, giving you the tools you need to support your child's sexual health and well-being.

But "Read Me" is more than just a how-to guide. It's a compassionate and empowering resource that recognizes the challenges and joys of parenting, and the importance of fostering a positive and respectful approach to sexuality. Whether you're a seasoned parent or just starting out, "Read Me" will help you create a more open, honest, and supportive relationship with your child around this important topic.

So if you're ready to have "the talk" (or have it again, in a new way), I invite you to join me on this journey. Together, we can help create a world where every child has access to accurate, affirming, and empowering information about their bodies and their choices.

Book Reviews

I have been looking for a book to help ease us into talking to my school agers about sex. I’m a nurse and am comfortable with all the anatomy but anything else had me scared. This book is a god send! I’m well prepared to answer questions while taking their age into consideration!

LEANNE LATTERELL

The author challenges readers to think about sex and relationships from multiple perspectives and is thoughtful in sharing anecdotes, research and specific suggestions. This really is a "train-the-trainer" approach and I'm certain that it will help parents at all stages reframe the way we approach "the talk". Sex can be an awkward topic and this text can help to increase your knowledge, comfort and confidence when it comes to talking (and listening) to your kids.

Dr. JESSICA O'REILLY

Dr St.John does a great job at normalizing the process of discussing sexual development with your kids. She also highlights in a compelling way the risks involved in letting peers or Google teach your kids about their bodies and sexual curiosity. [...] As a therapist, I can highly recommend this book for any parent who has been avoiding the talk, or is unsure of how to begin this conversation.

DR. COLLEEN MULLEN, PSYD., LMFT

Really enjoyed this book. It offered a new outlook and approach on how to have "the talk". A little difficult to put into practice but getting easier each time, Dr Lanae gives the tools to make it a success! Loved the storytelling and real examples the book provides. I wish I had found it earlier for the tweens but it's never too late. I will be gifting and suggesting to all parent friends!

In my own words...

When I drafted "Read Me: A Parental Primer for 'The Talk'", I was in my second semester at the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality.

I wanted to use what I had learned and combine it with parenting experiences from living in Germany, so parents could have an accessible parenting guide that helped them talk to their kids about sex (without needing to talk about sex).

My aim was to give parents the right tools so they could have genuine conversations with their kids - leading to better understanding between parent and child. I'm positive that with this parenting guide, you will be able to confidently talk about things your grownups couldn't!

So let's get started on building strong relationships.
